England by John Campbell, Head Verger at Lincoln Cathedral, is back in print. Get your Copy Today. Here is a thoroughly practical guide to every aspect of the work of a verger in the Church of England. From the ancient origins of the office to arrangements for a civic procession; from removing candle wax from altar linen to providing a welcome for visitors of every description, it is packed with invaluable information and advice . Home »The Guild Of Vergers I Would Rather Be The Door Keeper In The House Of My God Than Dwell In The Tents Of Ungodliness (psalm 84) Welcome to the Official Church of England Guild of Vergers website. The website has been designed to keep members of the Guild informed about what \'s going on in and around the Guild, to provide a resource of useful material, and also to encourage new members - particularly those who feel they have a vocation within the Church of England to one of the many forms of lay ministry under the wide-ranging title of Verger . Each Verger is at the forefront of the church’s ministry of hospitality, welcome, care (of people, buildings and sacred things) and outreach in one form or another. Ours is a vitally important task and whatever your particular range of duties or title – you are welcome here ! We hope you will find great enjoyment and fulfilment in your role and make many friends in this historic Guild community. The latest anti-terrorist information available to places of worship. We hope that you find this a useful resource and will use it often ! If you have any further questions, or wish to know more about the Guild, nationally or in your area, do please contact one of the National Officers. The first port of call is usually the General Secretary but other contacts are also given on our Contacts page. From the ancient origins of the office to arrangements for a civic procession; from removing candle wax from altar linen to providing a welcome for visitors of every description, it is packed with invaluable information and advice . Home » About The Guild About Us... The Church of England Guild of Vergers (CEGV) was founded in 1932, and has as its Patrons the Archbishops of Canterbury and York who take a very keen interest in the Guild, and together they appoint a priest to act as the National Chaplain. The Guild was founded to promote Christian Fellowship and spiritual guidance among the Vergers of the Cathedrals and Parish Churches of England. It has a current membership of around 750 with a further 100 members overseas, witnessing to the Guild’s influence in other parts of the Anglican Communion. The community of the Guild is divided into many Areas, comprising one or more local Branches, where friendships, help, and encouragement are to be found. Branches are responsible for arranging their own programmes of events, services and training during the year, details of which will be available from each Branch’s Officers. The Guild also enjoys national gatherings, usually including two annual Festival days and a residential Training Conference. Details are published by the host Branch in good time, and links are usually available on this website. Each Area is represented in the Guild’s governing body - Central Council - which meets periodically to transact the Guild’s business, discuss matters of concern, and plan for the future. The Central Council is also responsible for the various “departments” which make up our core activity, such as Training, Communication, Liaison and Welfare, whose officers serve the needs of the members. Together we try to fulfil our mission of “enabling by service”. By our very nature, the ministry exercised by our diverse membership is wide-ranging; some do so on their own through their preparation for and attendance at regular or special weekend services; many are on duty during the week to keep their buildings open for visitors and pilgrims; others do so through meticulous cleaning of the church and hall, tending the churchyard, keeping the buildings in good repair and keeping the drains clear ! Some exercise this ministry through administration; some are employed by schools or colleges, Garrisons or estate churches and form part of a bigger team caring for the community in those settings; others are the church’s ambassadors standing at the Gates of the Temple to welcome those who have come to worship or to attend a concert or formal ceremony and are responsible for the welfare and sensitive ordering of those who come, sometimes in large numbers, to our holy places; the ministry of others is through planning and taking part in great liturgies, carefully crafted, with many elaborate processions all carefully verged by teams of highly trained staff…. MEMBERSHIP OF THE GUILD is open to all persons employed or occupied regularly, whether full or part time, or as a voluntary verger (however titled), in the Provinces throughout the Anglican Communion. The Central Council may also invite and accept applications from interested persons, perhaps from other denominations, to become Associate Members of the Guild. Such Associate Members having no voting rights. Vergers from the United Kingdom wishing to become members of the Guild should apply through the General Secretary , who is in a position to know which Branch to direct the verger to. Overseas Vergers should apply to the Overseas Liaison Officer. The Guild seeks to make effective the ministry of Vergers through the following key objectives , by : Promoting the spiritual nature of the Vergers’ Vocation through Christian Fellowship and spiritual guidance for all its Members; Encouraging the advancement of knowledge by education , through maintaining standards of good practice , and by equipping Members for Ministry as vergers in all its aspects, through the provision of advice, training, resources , and by organizing and promoting training courses and conferences; Providing the means and opportunity for communication and discussion of ideas and proposals of common interest to Members; Providing support and encouragement to the Membership in all aspects of their duties whatever they may be and wherever performed; Advising , upon request, and making recommendations as to terms of employment and welfare of any Member; Recording the gamut of work undertaken by Vergers; in addition noting each Member’s training, experience and qualifications. The first stage is the Foundation Unit , this consists of sixteen assignments, covering preparation for worship, care of the building, records and archives, care of the churchyard, and care for the people of God. On completion, and if successful, the Guilds Foundation certificate is awarded. Some students may wish to undertake more challenging training by completing the second stage. The second stage is the remaining three units:- Pastor Unit consists of twelve assignments covering the individuals personal development, their relationship with people and God, care for others and resources. History Unit consists of eighteen assignments covering the history of church building, architecture, the history of worship, and the purpose of a congregation. Administration Unit consists of sixteen assignments covering communication, forms and registrars, the structures of the Church of England, and the role and importance of people in the life of the church. Attendance at Training Conference It is intended that all students who proceed to the second stage of the training course, will attend at least one residential training conference. Registration Application to start the course should be made on the prescribed form obtained from the Training Registrar. Administration When a students enrols, he/she should seek a tutor that might be the Verger’s own priest or chaplain or another Verger, whose duty it is to guide and work with them throughout their period of study. It is envisaged that the whole course will take a minimum of four years and some students will require a longer period, due to other pressures upon their time. No units should be submitted as finished with out the full knowledge and agreement of the tutor. Both student and tutor or mentor should initial the completed units on the back page, which then should be forwarded to the Registrar who will remove any identification and forward the unit to the appropriate assessor. Students who have completed the Foundation Course successfully will be advised of the result. Students who complete the modules of stage two, i.e. Pastor, History and Administration may be called for a viva voce examination, which will take place in London in October or at the Conference at London Colney in May/June. Submission dates for units So that the assessors may have course work in time for their meetings, and to enable diplomas to be prepared for presentation at the residential conference, please assist the assessors by adhering to the deadlines detailed below. Foundation Unit To allow for certificate presentation at the Annual Training Conference, Foundations units must be submitted to the Training Registrar by the 1st January Pastor and History Units These units are marked by the internal assessors, following assessment by the respective external assessor, in January of each year, and must be submitted to the Registrar no later than 1st November of the preceding year. Students having submitted courses, may be called for interview at the residential conference held in June. Administration Unit This unit must be submitted to the Registrar by 1st August so that the Diploma (if awarded) can be presented at the Residential conference the following year. This allows for time for assessment by the external and internal assessors and a personal interview, usually in January and is usually in London. Students and Tutors Students should meet with their tutors or mentors every three months and in addition, each student should have a more ‘local’ mentor, to whom they can have more frequent contact. For the Pastor Unit, where the student is considering his/her own spiritual life and faith, we strongly recommend that the student find a Spiritual Director. This may be a priest or someone who is a trained Spiritual Director. Most dioceses will have a list of people trained and willing to act. No work should be sent to the registrar before the tutor is satisfied that the work has reached a satisfactory standard. For the Tutor Are you as tutor satisfied that the student has not only answered the questions, but understands what the questions were really trying to get across. If the Question being asked is for any reason out of date, i.e. Common Worship replacing the ASB, rewriting of Cathedral Statutes , the establishing of the Archbishops’ Council etc, the Student should answer the question as it now stands, (not as it stood when his copy of the unit was printed). Likewise where a student does not fit into the Cathedral/Parish system i.e. Garrison verger, or a verger from a non-Anglican tradition, the student will hopefully explain the differences. Leaving the question blank, or “this does not apply to me” is not acceptable. Common Worship was introduced in 2000, replacing the ASB. Although the units are in the process of being updated we expect the student to bring his/her copy up to date by rephrasing the questions to reflect recent changes/ to comply with Common Worship. Here is an opportunity for the student to let us know how much they know about recent liturgical developments, but the questions about Sunday Themes no longer applies in Common Worship and may now be ignored. CPC 20/10/09 Candidates should be encouraged to present their units in the same manner as they are received, using the blue plastic binding clips. This allows work to be inserted at the correct places and also should be easier and cheaper when returning in the post, back to the Registrar. The assessors are looking for concise answers which answer the question show understanding of the topic application to the work and /or life of the Verger Sometimes you will need to read the Bible or other books in order to answer a question, but where this is the case, a footnote with the reference is required. Quotations should always be quoted in full and the author acknowledged. Please do not copy out chunks of text. Please take a look at the following link for rules on plagerism and copying. Referencing Golden Rules The use of computers if available greatly enhances the appearance of a presentation. If it is not possible to see the student personally, original work should not be sent through the post, only copies. If possible, students should always keep a duplicate copy, when the finished copy goes to the Registrar for assessment. Residential Training Conference The annual residential training conference is held for five days usually in early June, at All Saints Pastoral Centre, London Colney, Hertfordshire. All students will be required to attend the conference, which is structured to further the knowledge and ability of vergers and to equip us for our ministry. Apart from the formal lectures by experts in their own fields, Conference is also a time for fellowship among vergers from many backgrounds, and there is a great exchange for resources, ideas and fellowship. There are also workshops on allied topics, some trade stands and usually an educational outing to a Cathedral or Large Parish church. This coupled with the fun and fellowship we generate ourselves and a rich diet in Chapel and Refectory makes for a very rewarding time together. Bursary Fund Students should approach their Dean and Chapter or PCC’s for assistance with funding for Conference. However, for students who may find the cost of conference difficult, the Guild has a bursary fund, (as also do some branches). This is used exclusively for the training of students, particularly to enable them (and others) to attend. All applications, which are treated in the strictest confidence, should be made to the National Chaplain. The money for the bursary fund comes from the Bishops annual grants, we are most grateful to the Bishops for their support and generosity. Diploma of the Guild On satisfactory completion of the Course, the Guild will award the Student the Diploma of the Guild of Vergers. Diplomas will be presented during the Guild Congregation, on the first full day of conference. Thereafter the Guild hood may be worn, together with the use of the letters Dip GV after their name. Assessment Each module is marked by an External Assessor and an Internal Assessor and the mark classification agreed. Training Committee The Training Committee consists of The Training Officer, The Registrar, The National Chaplain, The General Secretary and two members appointed by Central Council, with Parish and Cathedral Experience. The members of the Guild are so scattered, and although some work with others in Cathedrals and large Parish Churches where there is community and support, the majority work alone where sometimes they must feel very isolated. I hope that the website will keep us all up to date with the doings of the Guild, the progress of Training and the necessity of prayers for those who are in need or sickness. The operation of the website is the responsibility of us all: for however good our webmaster is, it is us, the members who will keep it interesting and lively. Please let Amanda Berry have comments, details of meetings and other materials that you think would be of general interest, before the time that they happen so that even though we may not be with you in person, we shall be with you in prayer and thought. The ‘Verge’ is the rod of office (Latin - Virga; Old French-Vergier), and was used to ensure that the many processions were not impeded during worship. This was an important duty in the Middle Ages, and on important festivals two Vergers were on duty. However, the Verger’s duties have developed over the centuries, and now combine tasks which were often carried out by other individuals. Today, Vergers continue to have an important ceremonial role, but add management responsibilities, with the care of people and a variety of other duties , including the behind-the-scenes management of worship and the care of vestments, plate and other valuable objects. Vergers are committed Christians dedicated to serving Our Lord Jesus Christ and his Church. Their work brings them into contact with a whole spectrum of people who visit our churches and cathedrals, and they must be sensitive to the widely varying needs of these visitors. Many will be seeking historical information or just the time of the services, but others may be in emotional or spiritual distress, and to these the verger must offer a sympathetic ear, guiding them towards appropriate counselling if required. At a practical level vergers will often bear the immediate responsibility for the care and security of the building and - particularly in many parish churches - the presence of the verger guarantees that the building can remain open outside service times as a place of prayer and of Christian witness to the local or wider community. Please circulate this as widely as you can. I am sure you are all aware that the Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme which enables listed places of worship to claim back 100% of VAT incurred on repairs and maintenance to the building, professional fees and repair works to fixtures such as bells and organs. This Scheme has provided great relief to places of worship faced with raising enormous sums for maintenance and repair, and has enabled those who look after these valuable heritage and community buildings to maintain them for future generations. Over £102 million has been paid out to places of worship across the United Kingdom since 2001 through the Scheme, of which about 93% has gone to Church of England churches. This grant Scheme was introduced by Gordon Brown, when Chancellor of the Exchequer, in April 2001 as an interim measure while the European Union was holding a review of the Directive covering VAT rates. Although a reduced VAT rate has not yet been agreed with Europe, the Scheme is due to come to an end in March 2011, along with the Memorial Grant Scheme. Along with others, we are starting the campaign to get the scheme extended, some of which you will have already have heard about. But here is a quick summary of what has happened so far. Please spread as far as wide as possible. 1. There was a debate at the February Synod on Thursday 11th February which called upon the Government to give an early commitment to continuing beyond March 2011 the Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme - I attach a brief summary. A letter is now being sent to Government. 2. There is now a sample letter on www.churchcare.co.uk which we want to encourage many people as possible to send to their MP. The direct link is: http://www.churchcare.co.uk/news.php 3. There is also a Downing Street Petition. Again, please encourage everyone to sign - http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/VAT-refundscheme/ . The deadline is 29th August 2010. If you remember the Water Charging petition did extremely well and ended up in the top 3 in terms of numbers of signatures during its last months. 4. Manchester Diocese are preparing to set up a campaign website along the lines of the very successful http://www.dontdrainus.org/ . So keep an eye out on the Manchester Diocese website. 5. And the recent launch of the Places of Worship @ the Heritage Alliance Manifesto gave as their number one priority the need to continue the Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme. Home »The Guild Of Vergers » Anti Terrorism The National Counter Terrorism Security Office (NaCTSO), a police unit funded by and reporting to the Association of Chief Police Officers, has recently produced Counter Terrorism Protective Security Advice for Places of Worship The introduction suggests that, though congregations may find it difficult to believe that they could be at risk, it is possible that a place of worship could be the target for a terrorist because of its nature, the size of its congregation or because of a special event. Measures to counter terrorism are also relevant to other threats such as theft, burglary and arson – which remain the greatest threats to places of worship. The authors recognise that places of worship have to be welcoming and accessible and the guide is not intended to create a ‘fortress mentality’; but there has to be a balance between openness and security against the threat of terrorism. Absolute security is almost impossible to achieve; but the measures in the guidance should reduce the risk to as low as reasonably practicable. We certainly do not intend to be alarmist, but the advice is well worth reading. NaCTSO have advised the National Chairman that their officers will be distributing copies of the book to places of worship of all faiths and denominations that they have identified as being particularly at risk. However, any church can obtain a copy free, by downloading it here: CT Advice Places Of Worship.pdf With thanks to the Churches Legal Advisory Service and Paul Donlevey of the National Counter Terrorism Security Office Members Area Login For password problems please contact the communications officer Click on the audio bar below to hear what BBC radio 4 has to say about life as a verger. Home » About >> Patrons Patronage is the support, encouragement, privilege, or financial aid that an organization or individual bestows to another. In the history of art, arts patronage refers to the support that kings or popes have provided to musicians, painters, and sculptors. It can also refer to the right of bestowing offices or church benefices, the business given to a store by a regular customer, and the guardianship of saints. The term derives from the Latin patronatus , the formal relationship between a Patronus and his Clientes . Message of greeting from the joint Presidents, Archbishops of Canterbury & York. “Verger are almost as much a part of the Great British Collective Unconscious as vicars. From Dickens \' Edwin Drood through to Dad \'s Army, they are there, hovering (or hoovering) around the shrines of our imagination. Many of a certain generation in church life will have stories of the great and terrible vergers of the past (stories of the punctuation of Evensong with the extremely audible reprimand to tourists, \'You can \'t come in \'ere, there \'s a service goin \'on \'). But now the stereotypes belong to the distant past. The best vergers have always been creative, even pastoral servants to the life of the churches they have cared for. More than ever these days, the job is one in which vergers are going to be involved in some of the most crucial work of the Church in its reaching out to and welcoming those on its margins. It is going to require huge gifts of stamina, imagination and spiritual steadiness. The Church of England is fortunate to have so many men and women gifted in these ways who give themselves to this ministry. The present booklet is a splendid chronicle of the Guild \'s evolution, echoing the many changes in the role of a verger over three quarters of a century, It is good to have a chance of saying a heartfelt thank you to all who minister in this way, and to wish the Guild every blessing and prosperity in the years ahead.” +Rowen Cantuar: +Sentamu Ebor: First week of Lent 2007 Cantor: Archbishop of Canterbury The Most Revd and Rt Hon Dr Rowan Williams Ebor: Archbishop of York The Most Revd and Rt Hon Dr John Sentamu Members Area Login Click on the audio bar below to hear what BBC radio 4 has to say about life as a verger.
